Luxembourg - Corona Times - Émaischen

After what it feels like an year of lockdown, Easter is again here and it will be another lonely one as we are not allowed to travel, well not without a PCR test and a lot, but a lot of trouble, and we were not smart enough to make an effort to have our parents over (vaccinated and all, because at this Romania is doing very well and most if not all the people I still know there are vaccinated already). Granted, as we are Orthodox it does not feel like it is Easter, but we have the holiday. Weird, but do move on.

So a tradition very dear to my heart is Émaischen which happens on Easter Monday in a town called Nospelt and in later years on the streets surrounding the Marche-aux-Poissons area in Luxembourg city. It is a market selling clay whistles in the shape of birds called Péckvillcher. It is said that those little whistles were made by the potters in the Nospelt area after a day's work with the remaining clay from making pots or whatever the potters were making. More about this tradition and in well formulated ideas you can read here.

For us, as I've told you we do not celebrate the Catholic Easter, Émaischen was a reason to move out of the house, meet our friends and enjoy a market. Well, in Corona Times this is not possible anymore, but the potters in Nospelt thought of ingenious ways to still sell their clay whistles. I've read you can order one online and drive in Nospelt to pick it up on Easter Monday, but also there is a Pop-up Store in the centre of Luxembourg, on Grand Rue nr. 40 where for two days, yesterday and today, you can go and pick up your Péckvillcher.

Why would I buy a dust collecting figurine I will never use, you ask? Because it is tradition and because we need to keep sane and because those potters need to make a living and because we need normal human interactions, we need the stories and if you have kids, because they will love to blow your brains out once they figured out how to use them.

Last year, Ilinca's first Easter, we were all over the place with a small child and a pandemic and the Péckvillcher were on our last brain cell, but this year that Ilinca is a bit bigger and we can communicate better it was great that in this pandemic way we still could have our Émaischen. We went to Grand Rue 40 and she picked her own clay whistle and I've picked one and we made it fun and the sellers were delighted to tell us more about the tradition and about the birds and about their craft.

So if you read this on April 3rd, please go to Grand Rue 40 and buy a clay whistle. I think it brings good luck to hear it sing on Easter Monday.

As usual I am more active on Instagram @mademoiselle.ralu and Happy Easter, friends!

Luxembourg - Dying Easter Eggs the Romanian way

In Romania we are mostly Orthodox Christians so this year we celebrate Easter a week later than the Catholics. That is why this Easter related post comes now and not a week ago. I will not go into detail, pointing out the exact day in which Romanians are dying their Easter Eggs, because of course there is a certain day. Here in Luxembourg we had the chance to learn how to dye our Easter Eggs the traditional way, because Sebastian Paic a well known Romanian ethnologist came to teach us. I will lead you through the whole (or most of the) process with pictures and at some point, God willing (:D), I will have a video from Sebastian's workshops. You will find it on my fb page, Dichisuri.ro.
When we dye (for the sake of it I will use the term write or colour, because the terms in Romanian are exactly that), SO when we write on the eggs we (of course) use a pen. It is basically a copper wire wrapped around a wooden stick. BUT don't go making one for yourself, because there is a secret behind the thickness of the copper wire.
Also when we write on the Easter Eggs we don't just draw meaningless symbols, everything has to have a sense. That particular egg is from a museum close to Luxembourg, in Brussels (if I remember correctly), at the end you will see my funny attempt to reproduce it.
Sebastian had, of course, eggs coloured by him on display, so we could get a better understanding of the whole process.
Besides a pen you will need beeswax which is kept warm by a lamp
We coloured white empty eggs. Why empty? Because they can now be kept as decorations, as souvenirs from a lovely afternoon.
When colouring you start with the coordinates of the egg, similar to the picture
And then you start painting, first yellow
Then red and at the end black
The whole process is interesting, you have to think two steps ahead, and think in layers, because after each layer of paint, you cover the pattern you want to be left in that colour with beeswax.
These are the paints

And this is my final product, at least I understood the techniques. Keep an eye on my Instagram as I will most probably post there my eatable Easter Eggs.
SO, there you have it, writing on Easter eggs the Romanian way! I hope you loved reading this post as much as I loved putting it together! ALSO, if you fancy keeping in contact with me, drop a line at Dichisuri.ro on Facebook.

Buergbrennen Luxembourg 2018 - Just go Winter, already!

I feel as if I wrote about Buergbrennen too many times in my both working languages, Romanian and English. As expressing myself in writing in French might take a while, I will just write my impressions of the event and leave you with a tone of pictures and movies if I master the movie uploading tool of this blog without putting it on YouTube. If not, please go on my Instagram as I've highlighted one of my Insta Stories on my profile.

This year, more than others I need a little bit of encouragement for passing the Winter. I don't know why, but this year, the lack of sun affected me and I've started counting the sunny days (since December 11th - 12 days of sun). Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the cold, I don't mind shovelling the snow early in the morning to get to my car, I don't even mind that the days are shorter, but the absence of sun is killing me. So much so that I've started taking vitamin D daily, prescribed by the doctor of course.

So you see, I need all the allies I could get, plus Buergbrennen was a chance to meet with friends and have a nice evening. Of course the white sky is back, but now I start noticing small signs of Spring and sun here and there, also February is almost over and in March the Spring should come. Enough of me whining, here are the photos:

Belgium - Arlon Carnaval

Arlon Carnaval was actually a few weeks ago, but my busy schedule didn't allow me to focus on a proper post about it on the blog.

Here in this region once we burn winter the Carnival Season starts and we have carnivals in Germany, in Luxembourg and of course in Belgium. This year I managed to go only to the carnival in Arlon. It seems that every year that passes I am more busy or less interested in the "traditional" events in this region. I know four years ago I went to three carnivals, but this year I was glad I made it to the carnival in my town, cause for the past two years I missed it.

For Arlon, the carnival is one of the two or three major events that take place in a year, besides Maitrank and Christmas so it's a good reason to come and see it from Luxembourg. Most of the participants are small business associations or enterprises in the area, but there are participants that are more "traditional" than commercial.

There is the car of the Harlequins of Arlon an association of clowns, then some weird looking animals which are supposed to be "sangliers", boars, also an association based in Arlon. I don't know if these associations actually do something besides touring the carnivals in the region, but it was fun to watch them. Then there are the traditional Gilles. This year they were the highlight of the parade as they came in last. I didn't know much about them, except that they throw oranges sometimes at the crowd. The first year I came to Arlon I didn't pay attention and one of the oranges hit me in the head. Let me tell you that is not a pleasant experience. I've learned my lesson and now I pay attention to the oranges being thrown.

Another association I particularly waited for were the Arlon Giants. I like them because I assume they wear the traditional Belgian clothes and as I am interested in the traditional costumes of each country, I like taking pictures and finding more about that. As their name suggests there are three or maybe four giant dolls moved on wheels dressed in the traditional folk Belgian costumes and also the people that manipulate those dolls are wearing the traditional folk costumes.

Carnival is a season of laughter and joy and people are genuinely happy to come together and watch the procession. Children gather candy thrown by the participants of the cavalcade, adults enjoy a refreshment or two and everyone is happy.

Buergbrennen Luxembourg - Saying good-bye to Winter in style!

We burned the winter exactly one month ago and it seems to have worked. For about two weeks we have sunny, warm weather and I even got my summer t-shirts out from the winter closet and started wearing them. I am still afraid and each morning I look circumspectly out the window to greet the sun, but up till now I saw it daily. Fingers crossed!

Now, what is with the burning cross, you ask? Well it's an old Luxembourgish tradition, coming back from the times when Luxembourgers were more preoccupied with working their lands than banking. Buergbrennen is celebrated on the first Sunday of the Lent, not just in Luxembourg, but also in Belgium and Germany. In the recent years over 75% of the small towns in Luxembourg are celebrating this tradition on the same day so no matter where you live in Luxembourg you are always close to a Buergbrennen.

Traditionally this Buergbrennen is a bonfire made in the shape of a man, I honestly couldn't find out where they came with the cross from, but in Bonnevoie neighbourhood in Luxembourg city this was Buergbrennen's shape. The burning of the Buergbrennen is preceded by a torch-lit procession from the nearby church to the place where they will burn the fire. It is believed that the fire will chase out the spirits of the cold season figuratively burning the winter away.

Last year, the day after we lit the bonfire in Luxembourg there was a week of snow and wind and cold weather, but this year, as I said, it seems to have worked. I guess you just have to believe it :)

Nou și vechi, obiecte cu întrebuințare

Dragilor,
